Kriyas – Cleansing Techniques

Cleansing Techniques (Kriya) is considered very important just as much as Asanas or Pranayama. In order to gain maximum or best benefits regular cleansing is recommended. With purification body becomes more ready for higher forms of practices. When the body feels clear and free of pain the mind also functions properly.

There are cleansing practices called Shatkarmas or the six purification techniques. They are very important in that they help both physical and mental health, and the cleanses help with healing internal disorders.

  1. Neti: nasal cleansing, including jala neti and sutra neti.
  2. Dhauti: cleansing of the digestive tract including danta dhauti, vatsara dhauti and so forth.
  3. Nauli: abdominal massage.
  4. Basti: colon cleanse.
  5. Kapalabhati: purification and vitalization of the frontal lobes
  6. Trataka: blinkless gazing.

These practices are efficient in purifying the whole body and bring optimum health.

Benefits of Jala Neti

It helps to clear nasal passages. Removes cold, hypersensitivity, headache, sinnusitis, bronchitis and stimulates olfactory nerves.

Limitations

Neti should be avoided if you have had a recent ear infection or nasal septum operation. Also avoid neti for a few days after bleeding nose.

Benefits of Sutra Neti

Clear the nose and pharynx. Desensitizes to dust pollution etc. in nasal allergy clients.

Limitations

Same as jalaneti plus, back pain, hypertension, cardiac problems. Avoid during latter part of pregnancy.

Benefits of Dhoti

Vaman dhoti or kunjal kriya removes hyper acidity, good for flatulence and dyspepsia (indigestion), cleanses the stomach of all its contents, promotes proper functioning of the stomach and prevents hyper acidity. Dhouti Kriya is extremely useful for gas trouble, high acidity in stomach and for curing Asthma also. Useful for asthma and bronchitis to clear the air passages through reflex stimulation of udana prana.

Limitations

Avoid - in case of severe abdominal pain, abdominal surgery, tonsillitis, hypertension, ischaemic heart diseases and during menstruation.

Nauli Benefits

It massages the abdomen, stimulating the associated nerves, strengthening the muscles and encouraging optimum health of the abdominal organs.

It improves blood circulation to the whole trunk area and strengthens all the internal organs.

It is a panacea for many abdominal & stomach ailments including constipation, indigestion, and diabetes.

The digestive fire is stimulated nicely.

It can also alleviate depression, dullness and lethargy.

Nauli Calana Benefits

Stimulates and activates the abdominal organs. Stimulates to the intestines, tones up recti muscles, helps to relieve constipation piles and gastritis.

Limitations

Avoid in cases of acute ulcers in stomach for one year after abdominal surgery, people with weak lung efficiency try under expert guidance. Avoid in hypertension, ischaemic heart diseases, severe back ache and hernia. Avoid during menstruation.

Sankhapraksalana (colon cleanse)

Benefits

It offers a complete wash out to ailmentary canal. Keeps health of abdominal organs by removing all impurities. Cures chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disorder, malabsorption syndrome, dyspepsia (indigestion) and piles etc. very good for adults with diabetic meilitus.

Limitations

People with hypertension, heart disease and general debility must avoid this practice.
